Vaser Liposuction: An Overview
By Andrea T.
What is vaser liposuction
It is a patented cosmetic surgery technique which has become a valid alternative to traditional liposuction. With vaser lipo, the heat of ultrasound waves is used to melt fat into a substance very similar to a creamy olive oil. Melted fat is subsequently sucked through small pipes. Most of the times no scar at all is left on the skin or, depending on the treated area, a scar of the size of a small dot.
Main advantages of vaser liposuction
Thanks to its many advantages, vaser liposelection has become the favorite liposuction technique for many patients and doctors as well.
- The ultrasound does not cause any damage to blood vases and tissues, thus greatly limiting post-operatory pains and bruises to a maximum of six weeks, whereas with normal liposuction it can last up to two months. Hospitalization is also very short, and patients can resume their daily activities in a couple of days.
- What also makes the post-operatory period very short is that it is a very precise technique, as ultrasound allows to select the type of fat tissue that has to be treated.
- For the same reason above, aesthetic results are improved, as ultrasound will remove fat evenly.
- Cosmetic surgeons can expand their business by treating traditionally small and difficult areas. Thanks to laser technique, the results of neck, breasts, knees, flanks, and arm liposuction have dramatically improved.
- Vaser can also be used with male patients, in areas like the chest or the abdomen.
- As a form of liposuction vaser is less intrusive, which means it’s a safes surgical practice. Local anesthesia is generally used, thus ruling out the risks of total sedation.
Phases of the treatment
Before the operation
The patient is asked no to take any aspirin or vitamin E during the two weeks prior to the operation. Also, no body cream should be applied the day before.
During the operation
After pinpointing the zone that will have to be treated, both a melting liquid and local anesthesia are injected. Fat tissues are selected and melted woth ultrasound, then all the liquids are sucked out. The pipes used in vaser surgery are considerably smaller than those used in traditional liposuction, and will cause little or no damage to the surrounding skin tissues, leaving less irregularities.
After the operation
One week after the liposelection by vaser, the patient can start doing sport again and the treated area can be massaged in order to speed up recovery. The patient will have to be very careful and disciplined with the medicines that were prescribed, as no interruptions are allowed.
Hot showers should be avoided until the third day after the operation.
Depending on the treated zone, compression stockings for varicose veins or an orthopedic corset will have to be worn for up to three weeks after the operation
Can fat reform after the operation? In our body there is a fixed number of fat cells. Being more or less fat therefore does not depend on their number but on their volume. If for example we have 100 fat cells and we remove 70 of them through vaser liposculpture the remaining 30 may increase their volume, but could never become 31, reaching the volume of 100 cells.
